On May 3rd 2016, West Papuan leaders, parliamentarians, lawyers and others gathered together in the British parliament at Westminster to call for an Internationally Supervised Vote to determine the future of West Papua; a nation under illegal Indonesian occupation.
Joining members of The United Liberation Movement for West Papua - ULMWP were the Prime Minister of Tonga, the Foreign Minister of Vanuatu, UK Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn and other government representatives of countries around the world.
Determined to show their support for this historic meeting, the people of West Papua rallied on the streets and the Indonesian police arrested over 1700 people for joining the peaceful, demonstrations. (The largest arrests in the history of West Papua.)
This meeting was a truly momentous occasion for the people of West Papua as it was the first time that the rights of the West Papuan people were discussed and supported on such as scale at an international forum.
From this moment onward, the people of West Papua will have their right to self-determination supported by a broad coalition of international supporters. They will continue to struggle until they are finally free to exercise this fundamental right in an Internationally Supervised Vote.
We would like to give our deepest and sincerest thanks to all those who attended and supported this truly historic meeting, a key step on the long road to freedom for the people of West Papua
